As for library storage, an internal SSD is always the best sound.
No matter what type of external drive or source you use the computer has to receive the data and buffer/error correct it at the input buffer - this consumes additional system resources which results in a less "liquid" and "harmonic" sound (more jitter).
Any type of external drive that has power and signal in the same cable (USB, FIrewire, Thunderbolt) require expensive high end cables that shield the power from the signal.
Ethernet/CAT6 is often better than the "plug and play" powered drives since there is only signal going through the cable.
Some consider WiFi one of the best library storage methods since it doesn't require any cable and the data is buffered and error corrected - it consumes system resources but can have less data corruption than a "plug and play" cable like USB, Firewire, or Thunderbolt.
The fact is that all of these external storage methods are not as good as an internal SSD, and an external "spinning" drive is not as good as an external SSD.
As to which sounds best with all the rest of the options, like USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt, or Ethernet, that would depend greatly on the drive, the drive's power source, the cable, and the buffers in the drive and computer.
One important thing is to never use the same "data out" as "data in" bus - if you are going out by USB to your DAC then never go in from your external drive with USB. When you use the same data bus for in and out the CPU acts as a "traffic cop" which uses even more system resources and creates jitter. |
