Difference between Etymotic ER-4P and ER-4P/S
Does anyone know what kind of differences can be heard when the 4S cable is used? I have been playing the same song over and over again, switching back and forth between using the cable and without the cable, but I can't seem to discern any difference other than the sound getting softer with the cable attached. I've read that the response of higher frequencies are better with the cable. How do you notice? Do the higher frequencies sound clearer, relatively louder compared to the other frequencies or just tonally different? Thanks.

Hi engk...
I'm going to give your thread a little nudge back to the top of the pile...
I myself have got an 4P->4S cable on the way, and it'd be interesting to see peoples opinions..
(although ~ I do believe there are quite a few opinions... if you search through the archives)

Bump.
Com'on, I'm sure that there are headfiers out there that own the ER-4P with the cable. Thanks.

A lot of it really does depend on source.
Assuming your source is up to it the differences are a slight tone shift towards the upper mid from the lower mid, a subtle degree of additional detail in the very low bass and a certain degree of 'sheen' to the upper treble.
I personally prefer a slightly more mellow (and I really do mean SLIGHTLY) and the 4P offers this over the S.
Obviously the increased impedence also reduces the volume level so you may have to increase volume to compensate.
With the kit that I use I think the 4P has the edge but I may feel differerent if I was using a top-end source. I think that perhaps the easiest description is that it is like changing the filters - a slightly brighter and clearer sound. Let's face it, the Ety's are outstanding no matter what.
I hope this helps. |
