Ernie Watts is perhaps one of the very jazz musicians who started at the pop/R&B end of the musical spectrum (peaking with his contribution to the Chariots of Fire soundtrack) and has moved towards a more improvisational and challenging music as he has got older. One can perhaps locate his stint with Charlie Haden (hear for example Quartet West) as the major point of change for the tenor sax player. This album, The Long Road Home, is a first-rate straight-ahead jazz record and was recorded as late as 1996. It includes Kenny Barron (piano) and Reggie Workman (bass) in a band who deliver excellent contemporary bop across Watts originals and standards such as "Willow Weep For Me". On this particular track, Watts and his band are joined by Carmen Lundy, whose deep throaty vocals wrap nicely around the classic tune. She also sings on her own composition "At The End Of My Rope". All in all, Ernie Watts&#39 journey on the long road home seems to be a very fruitful one. --Phil Brett
