Nimbus records early 78's using their own unique system -
a monster acoustic horn about the size of an actual foghorn projects the sound out into a room, where the actual sound of the voices in the air is then recorded. Instead of a diamond stylus to pickup the tracks Nimbus uses a cactus needle - or rather several, replacing each freshly honed needle with another as the original dulls, and this is done several times for each record side. The results are quite different from any other early restorations. Essentially, there's a great deal of reverberation caused by the horn, but also remarkable projection. If you back up a bit from your own speaker in playing the Cd - and turn the volume up and wander into an adjoining room, certain normally recalcitrant (at least on records) voices escape the limitations to old acoustic horn recordings and burst out with great bravado. This can be a revelation in the case of many of the earliest sopranos, whose shellac 78's normally are a nightmare to reproduce, generally giving off a faint distant echo of what the singer must have sounded like in person. These early recordings - some over 100 years old - normally resist most efforts at producing the singer's color or beauty of tone, and the overall effect often sounds rather thin. In this Nimbus process it's possible to actually enjoy the singing, and people who normally can't stand early singers can find and even appreciate something worth hearing.
