Jazz Recordings: A Beginner's Guide

Jazz Recordings: A Beginner's Guide For the beginner, going into a large record store and looking through the jazz section can be a bewildering experience. Jazz history is an endless series of names, most of them quite talented, and with a nonstop series of releases coming out on a daily basis, there is almost too much to absorb. Where does one start? I have compiled this list of 300 recommended CD's for listeners who are just beginning to collect jazz recordings. Rather than take the easy way out and simply include some of the huge and very complete sets that are currently available (such as Mosaic's 18-CD Nat King Cole trio box), many of which are limited-editions or beyond the budget of the beginner who wishes to simply get a taste of jazz, I have instead concentrated on variety, giving the reader a sampling of the many styles and major players from all eras of jazz history (although due to space I have skipped over ragtime). Not that many listeners will immediately enjoy every one of these records (the range of styles is quite vast) but by listening to all of this music with an open mind, its beauty and excitement will be gradually appreciated. The emphasis is on smaller CD sets (with a few exceptions all are one or two CD's), domestic releases (also with a few exceptions) and music that is available as of this writing. Nearly every significant musician is represented somewhere on the list (for example Scott Hamilton is on Dave McKenna's No Bass Hit). Although I would never claim that these are the 300 "best" jazz recordings of all time, listeners should feel free to acquire as many of these releases as possible; no two are identical and all are good!
